“The best wisdom I’ve encountered as a supervisor was from Kim Scott, Author of the book Radical Candor. In a TED Style talk on being a great boss, Kim advises that “you are going to learn your most important lessons and make your most important mistakes on the backs of other people. [Therefore] It’s important to learn quickly and learn from other people’s mistakes.” While I find the idea of learning “on the backs of others” frightening, it also serves as a humble reminder to keep our humanity front and center as supervisors.

The team members we get to supervise benefit when we operate from a space of both grace and honest, direct feedback that helps them to grow and develop. I also find relief in knowing that effective management is not a skill that can be mastered overnight. Like a muscle, being an effective manager requires commitment, exercise and growth over time. I’m eleven years into managing others and still regularly learning new approaches that are more effective for different members of my team. Wishing you all the best on your management journey.”
