“When I was a new manager, I wish I had better understood how to empathize. When we only see from our own perspective we are at a disadvantage.
As a manager, I have learned that there are always people who will do less because they think they can get away with it – the way to deal with those types of people are to challenge them in a way that can be self-reflective – allowing that person to bring their own perspective to a unique challenge that only they can provide. This drives that person to not only add to the process, but links them to the process with a sense of pride and individualism.
I was able to grow as a manager by accepting that I didn’t have all the answers; don’t be afraid to ask questions of those you are leading. Just because you are the boss – doesn’t always mean you are the smartest person in the room. Knowing you are not is the real knowledge.
To be a successful manager, I think it is important to believe in your team, communicate clearly and often, and always be willing to learn something new. You don’t always have the right answers.”
