I find relief in knowing that effective management is not a skill that can be mastered overnight. Like a muscle, being an effective manager requires commitment, exercise and growth over time. I’m eleven years into managing others and still regularly learning new approaches that are more effective for different members of my team.

As a manager, I have learned that it is important to take the time to really figure out what you are already good at. Then, rather than just reading a bunch of things (or participating in a bunch of webinars) that validate what you already think is important and what you’re good at, try to figure out what you’re not good at and make that better.

When I was a new manager, I wish I had better understood how to empathize. When we only see from our own perspective we are at a disadvantage. I was able to grow as a manager by accepting that I didn’t have all the answers; don’t be afraid to ask questions of those you are leading. Just because you are the boss – doesn’t always mean you are the smartest person in the room.
